Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
